When Speyroc approached Ecoliving for renewable energy heating solutions, a ground source heat pump with boreholes was the favoured option as there wasn't sufficients surrounding land for horizontal ground loops.

The Carus House site in Clydebank is close to the River Clyde and a test bore hole confirmed that there were 55+ meters of sediment overburden which would have to be cased.

Case Study Outcome:
Developer and main contractor, Speyroc, installed the heat pumps to Ecoliving's design. Ecoliving commissioned the system. The cost of this pushed a ground source solution beyond the budget.

The alternative solution proposed by Ecoliving was outdoor air to water heat pumps feeding the 3 floors of underfloor heating. There are 5 units installed together outside the building.

Port Sunlight Village Trust is an independent charitable trust responsible for preserving and promoting the model village of Port Sunlight, created by William Hesketh Lever for his Sunlight soap factory workers in 1888. Almost all of the buildings in the Port Sunlight Conservation Area, including 250 rental properties, are Grade 2 listed and of unique architectural interest.

August 2009 saw the completion of 21 apartments in Water Street, Port Sunlight, a fantastic development in the traditional architectural style of the village yet with a high degree of modern comfort.

The Waste Disposal Training Centre in Rouken Glen Park in the south side of Glasgow opened in August 2003 with the purpose of delivering Skills Training to the unemployed and school children focussing on Environmental Improvements, Recycling, Construction, Rural Skills, Biology and Horticulture.

The Training Centre heating and hot water is delivered thanks to an Ecoliving designed system that combines Solar Thermal and Air Source Heat Pump technologies.   The solar hot water and heat pump systems are docked together, where the end result allows the hot water to be heated by the sun and when there is insufficient solar gain but still a demand for hot water the heat pump starts.  The head pump supplies all the heating requirements.

Terry O'Hara, MD of AHW provides some background to the installation of renwable energy at The Citadel housing development at Stromness in Orkney: "With high levels of air-tightness, it is imperative to get the moisture out of the building and replace it with fresh air in a controlled way that doesn't undermine energy efficiency. As Ecoliving showed us, this challenge was solved by the Swedes in the early 1980s with the development of heat recovery heat pumps which recover about 50% of the heat within the home, upgrades it via the refrigeration process and delivers heating and hot water as well as whole house ventilation. This is the solution we chose from innovative Swedish manufacturer NIBE and the result is a healthy, very comfortable indoor climate."
