Heat pumps provide an economic, environmentally responsible and reliable means of heating your home

The chances are that if you are reading this guide you have heard something about heat pumps. Maybe you have heard about free energy collected from the ground or air, or you have been told that you can reduce your heating costs. It is possible to retrospectively fit a heat pump to supply heating and or hot water to an existing property.

Utilising information such as size and age of existing heating system together with fuel bills, age of property, floor area, secondary heating (eg open fires) all assist to help predict the benefit of utilising a heat pump. In some cases it is possible to keep the existing heating system to which the heat pump can be “docked”.  There are a number of different types of heat pump, makes and models available.  Deciding which is best for your home depends on a number of factors. The following information is important to have handy and will help ensure you make the right choice:

1. Size of your home in m2

2. Number of people living there

3. Number of bathrooms / showers

4. Type of building (semi detached, bungalow, no. of floors etc.)

5. Age of building and history of improvements

6. Future plans (extension, renovation)

7. Extent and nature of surrounding land

8. Your existing heating system (radiators, under floor etc)

9. Heating / boiler type and age

10. Annual energy usage for heating and hot water (in kWh or £)
