The Islay Hotel - Ground Source Heating
Reopened again in the autumn of 2011 after major refurbishment, The Islay Hotel has been given a new lease of life after 20 years of lying derelict.
The hotel overlooks the harbour in Port Ellen and has once again become the focal point for the local community as well as providing comfortable, modern accommodation for visitors.
The Islay Hotel is a wonderful example of community engagement with ownership, management and staffing all by the local community led by Roland Worthington-Eyre.
The new hotel is built to a high standard and all heating and hot water is provided by a NIBE ground source heat pump with 7 boreholes each of 120m depth harnessing heat energy from the rock below the site. The 40kW heat pump heats 2 large accumulator tanks which supply hot water to all the bathrooms in the 13 bedroom hotel.
