Running costs savings and income from the Renewable Heat Incentive made ground source heat pumps an obvious choice over the alternative, oil boilers. Working with leading specialist, Ecoliving, gave us and the client a lot of confidence

Ground Source Heat Pump for Dundonald Care Home, Ayrshire

Following previous renewable energy projects undertaken with building contractors, Dickie and Moore, Ecoliving won the tender for the design, supply and installation of ground source heat pumps at the new, £2.25M, 42 bedroom care home unit at Dundonald Care Home in Ayrshire.

Rock Heat Collected from 8 x 200m Boreholes

The heating system consists of 2 x NIBE ground source heat pumps (each with and output 40kW) and 2 x 750 litre cylinders for domestic hot water. Heat energy is collected from 8 boreholes, 200m deep into rock which were drilled by Paisley based contractors, Rocklift. This creates a sufficient temperature difference, even in the heart of winter, to allow the refrigerant to evaporate and then become compressed, heating water to usable temperatures for heating and hot water.

Anticipated £16,500/year Saving over Oil

The installation of heat pumps avoided the need to install oil boilers in the new building and with anticipated annual saving in running cost a of £16,500 a year.

Heat pumps work well at maintaining a constant indoor temperature economically which is important in a care home. This together with the running costs savings and income from the Renewable Heat Incentive made ground source heat pumps an obvious choice over the alternative, oil boilers.
