Dream eco-home in Dorset with Dimplex ASHP
The Millers undertook a transformative renovation of a traditional Victorian house in Dorset with the aim of significantly enlarging the existing property to create a beautiful eco-friendly home.
The now spacious 3,500 square foot 5 bedroom home, with its contemporary extension, incorporates the latest in sustainable building design and high specification products, whilst maintaining the traditional character of the original building. A fully integrated Dimplex Air-Eau heat pump provides hot water and space heating, which is delivered to under floor heating on the ground and radiators on the first floor.
During the 2 year planning process Peter Miller sought the advice of Dimplex accredited installer partner Ecoliving, where Graham Haine, Director at Ecoliving's Bournemouth office designed the optimum system. All heating options and technologies, including a standard gas system, were carefully evaluated.
Graham Haine explains: 'The 12kW Dimplex Air-Eau inverter driven Air Source Heat Pump combined with the high performance Dimplex water cylinder offered the ideal solution'. It's cost effective, together with superior levels of performance and its full system compatibility with the hot water meant that we could specify and install the whole system with confidence. From an installer and project management point of view the installation and commissioning was very straightforward'
The heat pump needed to be installed to the side of the house, adjacent to the neighbours, which meant that it needed to be virtually silent in operation which is not a problem for the Air-Eau as it provides class-leading low noise in operation. This is a major consideration for specifiers throughout the UK and in Scotland, where heat pumps are subject to planning permission.
The older part of the property has been renovated, high efficiency double glazed windows and loft insulation fitted to 300ml throughout, with additional energy measures including the Nuaire mechanical heat recovery ventilation system. Hot water is supplied via the 250L EC-Eau unvented heat pump cylinder, which is ideal for installations where space is limited, and have a large surface area heat exchanger to maximise the transfer of renewable energy to the stored water.
The Dimplex Air-Eau heat pump is supplied as a total package, suitable for a wide range of domestic heating and hot water applications, and easy to fit to both new build and existing buildings. The heat pumps operate seamlessly with Dimplex EC-Eau hot water cylinders, which have innovative integrated buffer tanks for space saving. The heat pump packages can also be combined with the SmartRad fan convector radiators which contain low water volumes, but are highly responsive, reactive and controllable, for a total low energy heating solution.
